3 Rivers Writers Studio

3 Rivers Writers Studio offers online writing classes and workshops, and individual mentoring. We also offer "real world" classes and workshops from time to time in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and elsewhere.

Our online classes and workshops allow you to work whenever and wherever you like. Classes are designed to address issues of the writer's craft, and usually include readings on the craft of writing an excerpts that illustrate the points discussed. You also have the opportunity to share your writing and to receive feedback from classmates and the instructor.

Workshops usually focus on creating and refining new and existing work, addressing craft issues as they arise in relation to students' writing.

How to Get Away With Murder: Basics of Writing the Mystery Novel

6 weeks, June 1 -- July 12, 2020. $189

Fall 2020 (dates to be determined)

Are you being stalked by an idea for a mystery or thriller? This class will help you plan your book or series and avoid some of the booboos that make the work more difficult. We will read excerpts from published work and discuss elements of craft that they illustrate, and you will have the opportunity to practice what you learn and get feedback in a safe environment. The class will encourage you to move beyond the idea to words on the page (or screen!), and give you tools to keep you going. Enrollment capped at 12. More Information>>

Memoir as Collage: Write Your Story Bit by Bit

6 weeks - $189

Session 1: June 1 -- July 12, 2020.

Session 2: July 13 -- August 23, 2020

The idea of writing a memoir appeals to many people, but sitting down to write can be forbidding. This class will help you break through the barriers, collect materials, get the stories out of your head and onto the page. This is primarily a generative class, that is, you will primarily generate new writing a page or two at a time. If you do the assignments, you will leave the class with 5,000-15,000 words of newly drafted writing. Repeating the class may help you generate more writing. Enrollment capped at 12. More information>>

Nature Writing

6 weeks, July 13 -- August 23. $189

Good nature writing does more than tell us pretty stories about life and landscape. It also encourages us look beyond our first impressions, to learn more about our subjects, and ultimately to learn more about ourselves. In this cross-genre class we will explore excerpts from a variety of nature-oriented writings in multiple genres. Students will have the opportunity for feedback from classmates and the instructor, and may write prose (nonfiction or fiction) or poems from weekly prompts or find their own focus. Enrollment capped at 12. Full description coming soon. Register now

Feedback and constructive critiques are essential to creating polished prose. In addition, we learn a lot about our own work by carefully considering and responding to other writers' work. This workshop provides the opportunity for both, as well as responses from the instructor on individual work and on craft issues raised by students' submissions. Enrollment capped at 8.
